About HMS Lederkurs: how we make and check our courses
HMS Lederkurs is a Norwegian online school for health, safety and environment (HSE) training. We run 10 courses, from the training the employer must personally complete under Working Environment Act §3-5 to safety representative courses, first aid, fire safety and data protection. This page explains how the courses are made, how we keep them current, how questions reach a person, and what the certificate is and is not.
The courses
Every course is taken online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer. Most take between one and two hours. You start for free, and on most courses you pay only once you pass and get the certificate the same day.
How we write the content
Each course is built on primary sources: the statute text on Lovdata and the guidance from the authority that supervises the area, such as the Labour Inspection Authority (Arbeidstilsynet), the Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) and the Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet). When a lesson says what the rules require, it names the provision it rests on, so you can read the source yourself.
We never read more into a rule than it says. Where the law leaves the judgement to the business, we say so instead of pretending there is a single right answer. The examples come from ordinary Norwegian workplaces.
How we check the courses
Most lessons end with review questions, and each course closes with an exam drawn from a question bank. You need at least 70 % correct answers to pass. On the 40-hour safety representative course, the tasks you complete at your own workplace are also assessed by the course lead before the certificate is issued.
Rules change. When a statute, regulation or guidance page that a course relies on changes, we reopen the source and correct the lessons, the exam questions and the course page. The date a course was last updated only moves when the content has actually changed.
Questions reach a person
While you take a course you can ask about the subject matter, the certificate or invoicing through the contact form. Your message lands in our own inbox and is read and answered by a person who knows the courses, not by a chatbot. We reply as soon as we can.
What the certificate is, and what it is not
When you pass, you receive a numbered certificate as a PDF. It shows your name, the course, its content and the date, and carries a QR code and a web address where anyone can check that it is genuine. The Labour Inspection Authority states that the employer must be able to document in writing that the HSE training has been completed, for example with a course certificate, and that the documentation must state the content of the training.
The certificate is not a public approval. There is no public approval scheme for HSE courses like these, for us or for any other provider. The Labour Inspection Authority's list of approvals and registers covers occupational health services, cleaning companies and asbestos work, among others, but not course providers. On manager training, it states that the legislator has set no requirement as to who delivers the training or how it is carried out.
Nor does the certificate replace practical training where that is needed. The first aid course and the work at height course are documented theory training, and hands-on practice comes in addition. The GDPR course is not a certification and does not replace a data protection officer.

HMS Lederkurs is run by HEM, a sole proprietorship registered in the Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities (Enhetsregisteret) under organisation number 924 807 342. The address is Folke Bernadottes vei 6, 0862 Oslo. The same business also runs other Norwegian online services.
