Questions safety reps actually ask
How long does the 40-hour safety-rep training actually take?
The regulation requires 40 pedagogical hours (1 800 minutes). Real reading time for our 11 modules is 20 to 30 hours, because classroom repetition and discussion are stripped out. You schedule the sessions yourself, spread them across multiple weeks, and resume-state lets you pause and continue where you left off.
Do I get a valid certificate for the safety-rep role?
Yes. The course covers the content requirements in the Regulation on organisation, management, and participation §3-18 and §3-19. You receive a numbered, QR-verified certificate that documents 40-hour basic training under the regulation, ready to present to the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority on inspection.
What if the company hasn't elected a safety rep yet?
The Working Environment Act §6-1 requires a safety rep in every business with five or more employees (the threshold was lowered from ten to five on 1 January 2024). The safety rep is elected by and from the employees. Smaller businesses may agree in writing on a different arrangement. Take the course before the election if you like, so whoever is elected can step straight into the role.
Who can be a safety rep?
The safety rep is elected by and from the employees, see Regulation on organisation, management, and participation §3-2. Management does not appoint them. Trade unions that organise at least half the employees in a safety zone may appoint the safety rep on behalf of their members. The term lasts two years.
What's the difference between a safety rep and the Working Environment Committee (AMU)?
The safety rep is the employees' elected representative for safety work. The Working Environment Committee (AMU) is the joint employer-employee decision-making body in businesses with 30 or more employees. The 40-hour basic training curriculum is the same for both roles.
